There is a never-ending war in the media concerning the topic of abortion. Conservatives are “pro-life” and liberals are “pro-choice”, leaving those in between “pro-confused”. Amidst all the rigmarole, an important question remains for the Christian: what would Jesus say about being pro-life or pro-choice?
In today's world, being pro-life means choosing life for speechless babies in the womb, directly opposing all forms of abortion. Contrarily, a pro-choice platform typically leans toward a liberal view and lists abortion as a ”woman's right”. Blatantly put, those who are pro-choice are saying that abortion is okay, a basic human right, and a way to live your life unaffected by the trouble a child would bring.
As someone who believes every child is made in the image of God, I would also classify myself as someone who is pro-life. However, I can't help but think there's more to being pro-life than my stance on abortion.
I believe it's time for pro-lifers to step it up a notch. While we should absolutely actively fight for those babies, we should also be ready to choose life for everyone we meet. In Proverbs 31, the writer tells us to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute." But who classifies as destitute?
It is the victims of human trafficking, the soldiers suffering from PTSD, the homeless children roaming the streets of California, the mom who doesn't know if she'll make rent, and the girl with depression leading her to the edge of a bridge. The lives of these people matter. Who is stepping up to be their advocate? They are voiceless, speechless, hopeless, and losing their desire to live. Where is their spokesperson?
It’s time to realize that being pro-life is more than a political stance or a part of being conservative. Being pro-life is also showing the lost the way to eternal life.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and life.”
So if He is the way, the truth, and the life why aren't sharing that good news to the ones struggling the most?
We need to realize the world that is spinning away before our very eyes. People who are dying and in desperate need of the light of Christ; yet we are on our phones, consumed by the chatter, and turning cold shoulders to the cries of the world. Being a pro-life Christian shouldn't be as easy as changing your Facebook picture. It should be a mission to change the lives of the ones in need of eternal life.
“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17).
Conservative media presents a good case: we do need to stand up for the unborn. The injustice of abortion is a true crisis in our world. However, don’t let yourself forget the biblical command to be an advocate for all the speechless and oppressed.
