The Word of God is our standard. For the church, it is our guide, our compass, and ultimately, our bottom line. All counsel, wisdom, understanding, and perspective starts and ends with the Word of God.
Our thinking, points of view, decisions, and goals all should derive from Scripture. For the church, this is non–negotiable. Why? Because the Bible defines who we are and what we believe. It is that from which we are to take all of our counsel. So, when we look at the “church” today, that is, the institution that is made up of people who say that they know, love, and follow Jesus Christ, we must ask ourselves some tough and hard questions.
Think about some of the questions and concerns the church is facing concerning sexuality. The Word of God tells us very clearly that God made us male and female (Genesis 1:27). He created two genders. Not three or four or fifty or five hundred. He created two–male and female–and no more. Yet one of the tactics the Devil has used from the beginning has been to question what God has said and established (Genesis 3:1). The goal has been to attack the validity of anything God has revealed and oppose it.
“Why should God get to decide what is true and what is not true. Why can’t I make up my own truth?” That is the pathway of futility so many choose to tread. We have too often decided that we want the “freedom” to make up our own rules.
Yet the Bible proves itself true over and over again. The laws of nature and the laws of the universe are fixed by God. If we use His Word (wisdom) and walk in its light we can be blessed and will flourish. If we defy God’s wisdom by disobeying His Word we will find only death. The Lord says in Deuteronomy 30:19,
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.
If one decides to believe that one can fly, that does not change the laws of nature. Without some assistance from a flying vehicle, no matter how much one “believes” one can fly, tragedy will follow. That person will not break the law of gravity, they will prove its truth.
The Word of God is good for us. It is good for all people of any age. It is good for us spiritually, mentally, physically, etc. It is good for your marriage, your family, and your children. The Word of God will bless your whole life…if you apply it.
Consider some of the issues and questions the church must address today about life. Are babies in the womb human beings–are they people? Many people in the church would respond “Well of course they are people!” Then why do so many churchgoers support abortion? Why do so many people in the “church” support “reproductive rights” (code for the right to kill my baby if I want to)? Why do we have so many cowardly preachers and religious leaders who won’t preach and teach that one of the Ten Commandments says “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13) which means “You shall not take innocent life!”
We serve a merciful heavenly Father who will forgive sin, including the sin of abortion. Yet when the church preaches and teaches about life and standing for life, people time and time again, get angry because they don’t want to hear anything about abortion. Let’s choose to be hearers and doers of the Word of God. It is, after all, the bottom line.
